Shrapnel (noun) - a hollow projectile containing bullets that are designed to burst and explode before reaching it's target.
"...often useless because of the shrapnel in the earth but they carried it anyway, partly for safety, partly for the illusion of safety."
I found the definition of shrapnel off my own logic, The grenade exploded, showering its victims with hundreds of peices of shrapnel.
